Copenhagen-Babel

In the biblical story of Babel, the tribes of the world conspire together to build a tower to reach to heaven. Before long, God decides to thwart their efforts, by dividing the languages of the mutinous tribes so that they can no longer communicate. Thereafter, the nations scatter across the face of the Earth, presumably limiting the collective damage they could do.

As I watched the last three days of the Copenhagen Climate Fiasco, I kept thinking of the Tower of Babel. The Copenhagen Summit was the “largest gathering of world leaders in recent history.” It was not, however, unprecedented, still less a “turning point in human nature,” as Colin Blakemore in the Guardian opined. It was, rather, another instance of the human propensity for self-aggrandizement and hubris. Instead of building a tower to heaven, delegates from 193 nations gathered in Copenhagen for the purpose of controlling the future climate of the planet. Instead of unified agreement, however, they got chaos.

Playing to eager reporters, President Obama tried to clutch victory from the jaws of defeat. He announced, just before he left to return home, a back-of-the-envelope “agreement” reached among the United States and four other nations: “‘Each agreed,’ he said, ‘to list national actions and commitments with international consultation and analysis under clearly defined guidelines’ and aim to limit the global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius.” But the deal was denounced as a “sham” by many of the other countries who were not privy to the deal.

In ordinary circumstances, can you imagine any sensible person making such a precise claim about controlling the future climate with a straight face? It sounds like the opening line of a joke: “Did you hear the one about the presidents of the United States, China, India, Brazil, and South Africa who decided to limit the rise in global temperature to 2 degrees?”

And, like Babel, this risible hubris is not the delusion of a single or even a few megalomaniacs, but is believed by the key players to be within human competence.

The scattering of the nations started three weeks before the conference began, when the world learned that leading climate scientists, on whom the United Nations depends, had been manipulating the peer-review process, the data, and the statistical methods to make climate change appear more severe. And by the end of the two week conference on “global governance,” the developing world was mad at the developed world, China and the United States were mad at each other, “everyone” was mad at Obama, and dictator/court jester Hugo Chavez had taken the stage—twice—to condemn the United States and capitalism, to enthusiastic applause. Riots ensued outside the conference and chaos inside. Scores of environmental non-profits are now incensed at an ineffectual and incompetent United Nations, and are in despair about the prospects of international “cooperation” in preventing people from using the most affordable forms of energy. During the grand finale, Copenhagen, which has a moderate, maritime climate, suffered a blizzard, while President Obama and the American congressional delegation returned to Washington D.C. to face another, record-breaking, blizzard.

I wouldn’t go so far as to claim that all this is proof of a divine smack-down akin to the Tower of Babel, but I would suggest that it’s evidence that GOD has a sense of humor.

You're still on tour... why do you still do it? Why are still out here?  "It goes back to that destiny thing. I mean, I made a bargain with it, you know, long time ago. And I'm holding up my end ... to get where I am now," says Dylan.

And with whom did he make the bargain? "With the chief commander," says Dylan, laughing. "On this earth and in the world we can't see."

Dylan has been nominated this year for the Nobel Prize in literature for his songwriting. His new book has been a bestseller. It was published by Simon & Schuster, which is owned by Viacom, the parent company of CBS. Dylan is planning to write two more volumes of his memoirs.

$1.3 Billion Scam

How Goldman Sachs cost Gaddafi 1.3 Billion Dollars

Goldman Sachs managed to lose nearly all of the money it had been given to invest by the Libyan government, which eventually led the giant Wall Street bank to offer shares as compensation that would have effectively made Colonel Gaddafi one of its largest single investors.

The Libyan Investment Authority, a sovereign wealth fund worth tens of billions of dollars into which the Gaddafi administration poured the money it made from oil sales, handed over $1.3bn to the bank in 2008 with a mandate to invest in foreign currency markets and other structured products. The deal was struck months before the onset of the financial crisis, and sources close to the bank yesterday claimed that the LIA had initially been uninterested when Goldman told it that the value of the investment had lost several hundreds of millions of dollars.

But by early 2009 Goldman Sachs had lost 98 per cent of what it had been given, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. It is believed that senior Goldman Sachs officials were then summoned to Tripoli, and were told that, after losing the cash in just a handful of complex trades, the bank would need to offer some sort of compensation. The bank alleges that its officials were physically threatened during meetings in Tripoli, but denies that it hired bodyguards for its staff.

Along with several other Western companies, Goldman Sachs was eager to get its hands on some of the newly available Libyan wealth after international sanctions were lifted against the country in 2004. The LIA was, until the start of the country’s civil war this year, feted by the likes of HSBC, JP Morgan and Lehman Brothers as well as Goldman Sachs and other large companies in Europe and the United States.

When Colonel Gaddafi’s security forces were ordered to put down pro-democracy demonstrations that began in February, the LIA’s assets were frozen. Goldman Sachs is understood to still hold at least three different accounts containing LIA money; two in its asset management division and one in foreign exchange, a legacy of the initial $1.3bn.

Such was the scramble to mollify the LIA that talks on how Goldman should appease Colonel Gaddafi’s government were held at the highest level of the bank – including the bank’s CEO, Lloyd Blankfein, and Michael Sherwood, its leading executive in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. An offer was eventually made to the regime in Tripoli to take preference shares, a complicated financial instrument that pays a fixed dividend, but which does not necessarily give the holder an equity stake in the bank.

According to sources at Goldman Sachs, talks about how to recompense the Gaddafi regime lasted for more than a year and culminated in a meeting at Goldman Sachs’ London headquarters on 23 June last year. Those sources, who declined to be named, said that the bank has had no contact with the Libyan regime or representatives of the LIA since that meeting.

Sun Joffe Manifesto

Sun-Joffe Manifesto or the Joint Manifesto of Sun and Joffe was an agreement signed between Sun Yat-sen and Adolph Joffe on January 26, 1923 for the cooperation of Republic of China Kuomintang and Soviet Union. The manifesto asserted that the Soviet system was not suitable for China, and it announced in general terms the willingness of Soviet to cooperate with the KMT in its struggle to unify China at the time.

Adolph Joffe was one of the Soviet delegates at the Genoa Conference in February 1922 and, after the Soviet walkout, was made ambassador to China, as the Soviet troubleshooter (or Kuznetsov) of those days. In 1923, Joffe signed an agreement with Sun Yat-Sen in Shanghai on aid to Kuomintang on the assumption that the latter would cooperate with Chinese Communists, presumably with Lenin's approval (see A Brief Chronology of China Since 1915 in K. S. Karol's China. The Other Communism, New York, Hill and Wang, 1967, ISBN 0-8090-1344-4 (1968 pbk).

Soon after Comintern agents Mikhail Borodin (real name Mikhail Gruzenberg) and Adolph Joffe were sent into Canton to try and redirect Sun Yat-sen towards Bolshevism. Gruzenberg failed to persuade, but managed to secure the entry of communists into the Kuomintang government. The Sun-Joffe Manifesto was drawn up in 1923 to ensure China's collaboration with the Soviet Union.

"The Chinese Marxist Sun Yatsen (Sun Yixian) was an eminent freemason. Even Chiang Kaishek (Jiang Jieshi) co-operated with the Communists in the beginning. He was a 33rd degree freemason (of the Scottish rite) who later broke away from the Communists and became the leader of bourgeois China. The United States demanded of the Japanese to stop fighting the Chinese Communists between 1937 and 1945. General George C. Marshall (1880-1959), then secretary of state, demanded that Chiang Kaishek allow the Communists into his government. Marshall had been President Truman's special envoy in China from 1945 to 1947. He asserted that the Communists were good people but Chiang Kaishek refused to comply. Chiang Kaishek was left without help. Instead, the support for Mao Zedong increased (the aid to the Chinese Communists went via Moscow). On the 31st of January 1949, Communists in American tanks rolled into Beijing and on the 31st of October, the People's Republic of China was officially proclaimed. The civil war ended after having claimed 20 million lives" - Juri Lina.
